Getting to St Barth requires one more step than most Caribbean destinations, and it is the step that catches first-time visitors off guard. There are no direct flights from the US mainland. The island's airport — Gustave III, code SBH — has one of the shortest commercial runways in the world (650 meters), which means only small aircraft can land here. So the standard routing is: fly commercially to St Maarten's Princess Juliana Airport (SXM), then transfer to St Barth via a short flight, ferry, or private boat.
This transfer is roughly 20 miles of Caribbean Sea, but the options for crossing it vary dramatically in cost, comfort, and experience. After helping hundreds of guests navigate this journey, here is the complete breakdown.
Option 1: Commercial Inter-Island Flight
This is the most popular option, and for good reason. Several small airlines operate scheduled flights between SXM and SBH throughout the day.
The experience: You board a small propeller plane — typically a Twin Otter, BN-2 Islander, or Pilatus — seating 8-19 passengers. The flight takes approximately 10-12 minutes. The approach into St Barth is legendary: a steep descent over the green hillside, passing so close to the ridge that you can see individual houses, before touching down on the short runway that ends at the beach. It is exhilarating, not frightening — pilots who fly this route do it dozens of times per week and know every gust of wind.
Airlines: WinAir (Windward Islands Airways) and St Barth Commuter are the primary carriers. Tradewind Aviation offers a more premium service with larger aircraft and often more comfortable scheduling. Several flights operate daily in each direction, from early morning through late afternoon.
Cost: One-way tickets typically run 80-150 euros per person on standard carriers. Tradewind Aviation charges a premium — roughly 200-350 per person one-way — but offers a more polished experience with lounge access in SXM and guaranteed baggage handling.
Luggage: This is the critical detail. Small aircraft have strict weight limits. Most carriers allow 30-40 pounds of checked luggage per person plus a small carry-on. If you are traveling with large suitcases, surfboards, or heavy equipment, you may need to arrange excess baggage in advance — or it may need to follow on a later flight. Pack accordingly or let us arrange the logistics.
Booking tip: During peak season — especially around Christmas, New Year's, and Carnival — these flights sell out weeks in advance. Book your inter-island transfer the same day you book your villa.
Option 2: Private Charter Flight
For groups or guests who want guaranteed scheduling and a seamless experience, a private charter eliminates all the friction.
The experience: A dedicated aircraft waiting for you when you clear customs in SXM. No scheduled departure to catch, no crowded terminal, no luggage worries. You go when you are ready. For families arriving on long-haul flights with jet-lagged children, this convenience is worth every cent.
Cost: A private charter from SXM to SBH typically runs 1,500-3,500 euros for the aircraft (not per person), depending on the plane size. For a group of 4-8 travelers, the per-person cost becomes very reasonable when compared to commercial tickets plus the stress savings.
Operators: Several charter companies serve this route. We work with the most reliable and can arrange your charter as part of your villa booking. The key advantage is that we coordinate your charter timing with your commercial flight arrival, building in a realistic buffer for customs and any delays.
Option 3: Ferry from St Maarten
The ferry is the most affordable option and offers a different perspective on the journey — arriving by sea gives you your first view of St Barth from the water, which is beautiful.
The experience: High-speed catamarans operate between the Marigot or Oyster Pond ferry docks in St Maarten and Gustavia harbor in St Barth. The crossing takes approximately 30-45 minutes depending on sea conditions. On a calm day, it is a pleasant ride with spectacular views of the island chain. On a rough day — which can happen, especially in winter trade wind season — it can be quite choppy. If anyone in your group is prone to seasickness, consider this carefully.
Cost: Round-trip ferry tickets are approximately 80-120 euros per person for adults, with discounts for children. This makes it the most budget-friendly option by a significant margin.
Schedule: Ferries typically operate 2-4 departures per day in each direction. The schedule is more limited than flight options, so you will need to plan your SXM arrival around ferry departure times. During peak season, additional departures are sometimes added.
Luggage: Ferries are much more forgiving on luggage than aircraft. You can bring full-size suitcases without weight restrictions, which makes this option attractive for extended stays or guests traveling with heavy gear.
Getting to the ferry dock: This is the hidden friction point. SXM airport is not next to any ferry dock. You will need a taxi from the airport to the ferry terminal — roughly 20-30 minutes and 20-40 USD depending on which dock. Factor this transit time and cost into your planning.
Option 4: Private Boat Transfer
For the ultimate arrival experience, a private speedboat or yacht transfer from St Maarten to St Barth combines convenience with genuine luxury.
The experience: A captain meets you at a private dock in St Maarten and takes you directly to Gustavia harbor — or even to a mooring near your villa if it has waterfront access. The crossing takes 30-45 minutes by speedboat. Some guests opt for a slower yacht transfer that turns the journey into a mini cruise with champagne and canapes.
Cost: Private boat transfers start around 1,500-2,500 euros for a speedboat (for the boat, not per person). A yacht transfer is more and depends on the vessel. For a couple, this is a splurge. For a group of 6-8, the per-person math becomes quite reasonable — and you arrive with a glass of rose in hand rather than cramped in a ferry seat.
Best for: Groups arriving together, anyone who wants to combine the transfer with a scenic Caribbean cruise, and guests who want the most private, stress-free arrival possible.
Option 5: Helicopter
The fastest and most dramatic way to reach St Barth. Helicopter transfers are available and take approximately 7-10 minutes door to door.
Cost: Expect 3,000-5,000 euros for the helicopter. This is the most expensive option, but for guests arriving for a special occasion — an anniversary, a milestone birthday, a proposal trip — the arrival itself becomes part of the experience. Landing at St Barth's helipad with a bird's-eye view of the island is genuinely spectacular.
Availability: Helicopter service is not available daily — it depends on operator schedules and weather conditions. Advanced booking is essential. We can arrange this as part of your trip planning.
Our Recommendation
For most of our villa guests, we recommend either a commercial flight with Tradewind Aviation (for the reliability, lounge access, and overall polish) or a private charter (for groups of 4+ where the per-person cost becomes very competitive). The ferry is excellent for budget-conscious travelers and for those who want more luggage flexibility. Private boats and helicopters are for guests who want the arrival itself to be a memorable experience.
Whichever option you choose, the critical thing is to book early — especially during peak season — and to build in time buffers. International flights get delayed. Customs in SXM can be slow. Weather can push back inter-island departures. A good buffer ensures you arrive at your villa relaxed rather than frazzled.
We handle transfer logistics for all our villa guests as part of our concierge service. Tell us your inbound flight details, and we will take care of the rest — booking, coordination, backup plans, and a driver waiting for you at SBH airport to take you directly to your villa.
